In the Texas Panhandle town of Amarillo, New York attorney Max Friedman is assigned to represent a nightmare client. Joe Wagner is a violent man, dangerous both to family and friends. As Max builds his defense case for murder, he reveals a reason for Joe's violence. But is it a justification? The characters whom Max meets during the course of his investigation include Smith Dixon, a career criminal trying to change the course of his life; Carl Puente, a gambler desperate for a big score; Carl's brother-in-law Freddie Odom, a family man drowning in alcoholism; legendary police detective Champ Phillips; Angel, a pool hall owner who both frightens and attracts Max; and Bailey, a wolf-dog hybrid who is the bouncer at the pool hall.

Amarillo was a truly enjoyable book. Juxtaposing a New York lawyer (Max) with the inhabitants of the Texas panhandle worked really well.
Max is in Amarillo because that's where he was when his car broke down. When he enters the local pool hall for a coke (Max is a dry alcoholic) and is immediately hired by one of the players, his stay is set in motion.
Pool hall owner Angel is fascinated by Max and is approved by Bailey, her wolf-dog bouncer.
But then, Max, who has gotten a temporary license to practice in Texas, is assigned as a public defender for a killer. Max is a good lawyer and decides to discover what makes this killer tick, and the story, which has not been simplistic even up to that point, takes a whole new turn.

Amarillo (Audible Audio Edition) Bill Durham Michael Butler Murray William C Durham Books Reviews

With various beloved people, I've driven through Amarillo half a dozen times, staying in motels, eating at steak houses, smelling the manure, admiring the sunsets, and taking a side-tip to Duro Canyon. When I came across this title on the daily deal I was drawn to it -- I wondered how familiar the location would seem to me. I thought the author did a remarkable job of evoking a setting that was immediately familiar to me. And yet, what do I really know? After all, I'd never been a resident there, just a passer-through. But the place had left such a strong impression!

And so do the characters in this novel. The alcoholic New York Jewish lawyer so dedicated to his recovery, the bar/pool hall owner with her beloved animal companion, the world of pool in places like that -- new to me, all came wonderfully alive.

But my favorite thing about the book are the marvelous similes the author pops out periodically. Such shocks of recognition! So many inside jokes.

I had a good time.
I loved this book. I have lived in the Southwest and Bill Durham has this area, the lingo and the culture down perfectly. Also, the main character's New York background adds contrast and tension in a good way. His love interest is a strong woman who is clever, smart and very capable with a dog I would give my eye teeth for. Even the dog has a strong character that holds it's own with the other colorful cast. All Durham's characters are well developed with strongly individual personalities. The legalese is very accurate and convincing and the trials suspenseful. He is an intelligent writer who turns out convincing and smooth dialogue that is clever and very humorous without taking away any of the suspense of the crime action that is the engine that drives the plot. The whole book is joyful and rich, funny and scary with the eccentricities and flavor of the Texas Panhandle. Durham has managed to pack a lifetime of characters and behavior in this one book and keep me interested from beginning to end. There is something for everyone; Shakespeare quotes, Latin, horses, saddles, cowboy hats and boots, Western riding, music and movie classic references, beer, pool, pool hustling, bad guys with a tiny bit of sympathy and slightly ambiguous good guys, law, law books, courtroom drama and even Alcoholics Anonymous without a touch of self-righteousness or judgement. I have not been so entertained, intrigued and yet felt compassion and sympathy for characters in a book, in an age. Trust me, this stuff is true to the bone.I was not nearly ready to finish with this book, but when it came to an end, I avidly searched for his next book. Since "Bull Durham" is a tobacco well known in the Southwest I supposed he was using an alias, but he has a well known reputation as Bill Durham, which is just downright lucky. Anyway, I believe this is his first book but I do hope there is another in progress. Mr. Durham, I am an avid fan waiting for your next book with bated breath and lots more cliche's which you do not have to rely on. Thank you.
At first, this book did not grab me at all, and I seriously considered shelving it after the first 25 pages or so, as it seemed it was just page after page of introducing new characters. But since there were so many positive reviews I decided I'd give it another 25 pages, and then decide. Honestly, it still wasn't pulling me in after 50-60 pages, but it was getting better. Then all of a sudden the story took on a life of it's own, and the rest of it was simply awesome. Several seemingly unrelated subplots start coming together to form the very fulfilling main plot. The second half of the book deals with the trial, along with Max's growing personal involvement with Angel, and made for a fascinating read. Great writing, vivid descriptions of the locales, superb character development, and the relationships between all the different sets of characters all combined for one tremendously good story. And just when you think it's over, it revs up again for another tense and suspenseful climax. Also, unless I'm forgetting someone, there is full closure for just about everybody involved. I'm so glad I did not give up on this book!
I really enjoyed this book. Although I've never lived in the Panhandle, my work used to take me there on a frequent basis. Durham is obviously familiar with the area and captured its essence very well in the book. The characters are believable and interesting. I had no trouble visualizing how events such as those in the story could occur in real life. My only criticisms don't take away from the story at all, but due to my familiarity with the area, bothered me some. It is true that there is a large cowboy culture in the area; boots are popular footwear for both men and women, but not everybody wears boots. Long hair on a male is not that unusual either by my observation. (Most likely it'll be on a cowboy or Native American.) Much of the story revolves around events at a location on the "Borger Highway". While I know the highway he refers to, I'd never heard it called that. My recollection of it is the "Fritch Highway". In the book, Durham leaves me with the impression that the city of Amarillo is just a small town in the Texas Panhandle. Just the opposite is true. Amarillo is a thriving, modern city with over 200,000 residents in the metropolitan area. This is quite large for anywhere in West Texas.

This book is a great read, and I found it difficult to put down. I highly recommend it.
