Marianne G. Petrino and her husband convinced her mother to travel with them to Sicily in 2010 in order to commemorate their 30th wedding anniversary. Besides visiting tourist sites on their itinerary, they wished to connect with the past and meet their relatives in the mountain town of Cerami. This was the birthplace of the author's maternal grandmother, who had departed Sicily forever in 1907 to join her family in the United States. The trio cruised the island in a gargantuan car that nobody with any common sense would normally drive on rural roads or narrow streets. And much like Odysseus, the travelers often got lost while attempting to decipher diminutive road signs and navigate diabolical traffic circles. But with a rosary in hand for protection against a vehicular demise or an unending detour, they fought adversity. Miracles of the Blessed Virgin Mary! Ancient Greek ruins! Pastry made by nuns! On every street and around every turn, Sicily offered wonder and gave them the adventure of a lifetime.

Full Tank No Damage Three on a Sicilian Odyssey Marianne G Petrino 9780983352020 Books Reviews
Full Tank & No Damage is one of those books that I looked at and thought that it should be a quick read. It didn't work out that way. The history and travel buff in me came out often when Marianne would mention a location or event on her story. Each time she did, I ran to Google to learn more. This fascinating and often humorous tale of Marianne's trip to her family's homeland with her husband and mom made me feel like I was right there with them. When Marianne experienced severe migraines before and during her long flight to Sicily, I wanted to offer her some water to battle the dehydration that I knew she must have been experiencing. When they met her Sicilian relatives, Marianne made me feel like they were my own. I laughed over Marianne's map reading abilities and whenever her mom would make it clear to those around her that she was not going to take any guff. Although I had never thought about it before, Marianne's description of Cerami has made me want to go visit that quaint and historic town.
Marianne mentioned her mom's childhood and how that would be material for another book. I look forward to reading it.
A memoir/travelogue of a trip to Italy/Sicily, the author's ancestral land.
The best word I can find to describe this story is irregular. Some parts of the writing are poignant, eloquent, or hilarious, while others are choppy and unclear. More than once, I was not sure what happened, as transitions were missing, conversations stopped mid-topic, and suddenly the author, her husband, and her mother were in a different place from the previous location with no warning. Some of her descriptions were detailed, while others were lacking. I found myself wishing this were an interactive book, with links to photos, websites, and video (since they did take video on the trip).
But it was not all bad the author fell in love with Sicily and with her never-before-seen relatives. The people they encountered were warm and caring for the most part, and the overall picture that was painted was appealing and made me, as a non-Italian reader, want to visit. The food sounded amazing. I was also very glad she was able to take her elderly mother to visit.
If you can put up with the style and writing problems, it is a worthwhile book; if these elements bother you, pass on this one.
I just saw that the author noted that the pictures are in black and white. I had an advance copy of an e-book which was sadly lacking in images. With them, my rating would have gone up by a star.
In her "reflections & acknowledgments" chapter the author states that she chose to write this travel memoir in the conversational style of her natural voice. While I've never met Marianne in the flesh, we've chatted on the phone often enough for me to be able to attest that the book does sound like her. Marianne's natural voice is fun.
In case you're another reader who actually reads all that information on the copyright page, let me mention that the Lion of Cerami on the cover is a natural rock formation. I was expecting a statue, but once I knew that, I could see the lion.
The first two chapters introduce us to Marianne and her family/ancestors. Mrs. Mary Marra Petrino, Marianne's mother, is the true heroine of the book,in my opinion. We meet her on page one, where she is casually giving her daughter a historic amphora. By page five and the episode of Mrs. Petrino versus the passport clerk, I was ready to take the Matriarch of the Formidable Glare into my heart. (Shades of the grandmothers and aunts in so many of Georgette Heyer's Regency Romances...)
My roots may not be in Cerami, but Marianne's description made me wish I had the money to visit. I'd love to see the churches, art, ruined castle, bronze age settlement, and the cemetary. That last has the kind of fancy sculptures my siblings and I loved to look at in the graveyard of the Maryland church where we grew up. It would be nice to see how the wild beauty of the mountains of Cerami compare to those I can see out of our windows. (Loved Mrs. Petrino repeating their cousins' explanation for Cerami's nature on page 61)
Foodies should enjoy the descriptions of the gastronomical delights available in Sicily.
My favorite descriptions were of the temple ruins in Akragas. Marianne's amusing reminiscence of a conversation she once with her late aunt while they were watching an old Clark Gable movie can be found on page 67. My one disappointment with this chapter was that she didn't include the picture she took of her toy fox at the Temple of Zeus. (Fox in another setting can be found on page 125.)
For my money, the best title is on page 76, which is for the chapter wherein our travelers obtained the pasty made by nuns that was promised on the back cover. I mentioned that title to one of my sisters. Her groan was heartfelt.
The episode at the post office in Noto left me laughing, but I didn't have to live through it. The visit to the chocolate shop in Modica made this chocoholic sorry she wasn't there.
Visits to Syracuse and Catania get their own chapters, spiced with Marianne's comments and bits of conversation.
Whether you're looking for places to see in Sicily on your next vacation or you enjoy humorous recountings of others' travels, you should have an amusing time with this book.
