Rock Star Taylor Ross thinks the best way to get over her broken heart is to have a one night stand with a hot stranger in a bar. What I Liked
I was happily surprised with how much I enjoyed this one and how much I liked both Taylor and Colt. Taylor was a wild girl but she knows when to pull it back and when her label threatens to drop her if she doesn't get a new album written she buckles down and acts like a mature adult. She may like to drink and party but she's not the stereotypical always wasted, drugged up rock star that often gets portrayed. Music saved her from a poor childhood and Taylor will doing whatever it takes to keep it in her life. Colt was damaged from his time in the military overseas and his upbringing with an alcoholic mother but his desire to protect people comes through strongly. I loved how Taylor and Colt were together. They could both be themselves and know they wouldn't be judged. Colt was very sweet with Taylor and it was nice to see such a tough hero also have a gentle side. The previous book, Necessary Risk, portrayed Colt as this wild-card mess-up and I was expecting to not really like him but Tara Wyatt really surprised me. He had a lot of guilt and shame on his shoulders but he was genuinely a caring and nice guy.
There were also some story elements I really liked. The stalker was exceptionally creepy and Wyatt did an amazing job of giving me the creeps whenever he was on the page. I liked that initially Colt is hired to just keep Taylor in line so she can work on her music; there's no knowledge of a stalker. This allowed them both to just be normal people getting to know each other and made it so that Wyatt could incorporate the pranks without it seeming unprofessional. Had Colt been originally hired to protect Taylor from a stalker than their games and flirting wouldn't have worked. I also appreciated that they involved then police at all the appropriate times and that it meant something when Colt killed someone who comes after them. Too often suspense romance just glosses over a character killing enemies left and right or the hero has to go it alone even though that's more risky or unsafe. This made the story feel more realistic and the characters more likable for being real people.
What I Didn’t Like
There were only two things I didn't like and they are some what nitpicky. I personally found the stalker referring to Colt as "the brute" to be annoying. It was more that it just sounded weird and it would jar me out of the moment. And second I wasn't crazy about Sean (from Necessary Risk) being so bent about the reason why he fires Colt from Virtus. It seemed like an honest mistake and that Sean was just holding a grudge. I can understand him firing Colt but to think so poorly of him afterward was just un-Sean-like.
As book two in the author’s Bodyguards series, Primal Instinct is just as well done as the first book. This story features Taylor Ross, a rock/pop phenomenon who is the best friend of Sierra, the heroine from the first book. Taylor has been getting into some trouble lately which causes her record label to hire a full time bodyguard for her. How ironic that one of the bodyguards that has been hired is Colt, her one night stand who she felt more than just lust for. Colt, also, felt a strong connection to Taylor during their night of passion and is happy to reconnect with the talented and sexy beauty. But, neither of them feels worthy of love or commitment from anyone because of past hurts.
Taylor is a strong, sexy, raunchy, tell it like it is kind of character who isn’t afraid to act like the strong rocker chick. But, deep down, she is vulnerable and scared and feels unworthy of being loved for the long term. She had a relationship going with a body guard who works with her best friend’s boyfriend, but that fizzled and left Taylor hurt and looking for ways to forget him. Colt has also been hurt, but his hurt happened on the battlefield where he witnessed something awful which caused severe PTSD and nightmares for the former soldier. He won’t talk about it with anyone and looks for ways to numb the pain and stop the dreams. Until Taylor.
These characters have such an intense chemistry together. Yes, this book is raunchy and smexy, but it fits the characterization and storyline. There is a lot of intense suspenseful action going on throughout the book, something neither of the characters were prepared to fight against. A crazy/dangerous father, a psychotic fan, and then their own demons each present themselves as a roadblock to happiness for Colt and Taylor.
While this is the second book in a series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone. Tara Wyatt has just been added to my must buy list of authors because she continues to write amazing suspenseful stories that keep me engrossed and wanting more! Kudos, Ms. Wyatt!

I am really loving this Bodyguard series by Tara Wyatt! I thought she couldn't top Sierra and Sean from the first book, but I loved the connection between Taylor and Colt even more! They were powerful and raw ... sweet yet sexy as all get out ... wounded yet strong enough to reach for what they wanted. Great supporting characters and a suspense laced plot aid in making this a well rounded story. I really enjoyed it!
Rock star Taylor Ross has been let down and had her heart broken one too many times ... and she's simply done! She lets loose and loses herself in anything she can find ... a bottle, a quick screw, a fast car. Now all of a sudden her record label thinks they can't trust her to get the job done on her next album and throw a bodyguard at her to keep her on the straight and narrow ... oh, and just her luck? It's the sex machine that just gave her the best one night stand of her life!
Former Army ranger Colt Priestly can't believe that his life might actually be looking up when he is assigned to work with the woman he can't stop thinking about. He might be haunted by his past and not capable of giving her everything she needs, but he can't bring himself to turn away from the pull he feels towards her.
When danger rears it's ugly head and Colt has to buckle down and keep Taylor safe, they decide they can't deny their feelings for each other any longer ... but will they be able to make it last for the long haul when outside forces interfere?
